Top Ten Ways Physics Applies to Disney

Ten: Bambi

When Bambi went skating with Thumper on the ice it was hard for him to stop gliding and slipping. This is because of Newtons First Law which states an object in motion wants to stay in motion and an object at rest wants to stay at rest. When Bambi began gliding on the ice he couldn't stop because there was not a lot of friction and his body wanted to continue to glide on the ice until the force of the snow bank stopped him.
Nine:Hercules

When Hercules throws the Titans into space, he spins them around repeatedly and the lets go. The Titans flung into space due to centripetal force. By extending his arms and the Titans, he increased their tangential velocity and made them the farther from the center of gravity. When Hercules lets go of them they want to continue to spin based on Newton's first law and they spin out into space!
Eight:Toy Story

When Buzz and Woody are being chased by Scud they use RC to speed away. In order for RC to increase his speed and go faster then Scud, he had to accelerate. Acceleration is the rate at which an object speeds up or slows down. Later in the movie, RC loses battery life and accelerates backwards or decelerates until they are at a stop, luckily for them Scud hd stopped chasing them.
Seven: The Little Mermaid

Ariel is constantly singing on the beach! When she is singing Part of Your World you get the chance to see the tides. There are two types of tides, a spring tide and a neap tide. Neap Tides are when there are half moons and the moon is on either side of the earth and the sun is not directly in front of it. Spring tides are when the tides are at their highest and lowest and there is either a full moon or a new moon. Also in a spring tide the sun is directly in front of the moon or the moon is directly behind the earth and the sun. Spring and Neap tides are due to the differences in forces on each side of the earth when is it revolving throughout the day.
 Six: Aristocats

In The Aristocats, Madame Adelaide's lawyer George comes to talk about her will. The cooky lawyer uses Edgar's suspenders to propel him up the stairs. Newton's third law states every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When George applies a force to Edgar's suspenders, the suspenders have an equal and opposite force to him. When he releases his feet, the suspenders, or opposing force, pull Edgar up the stairs.
Five:Tangled

In the movie Tangled, Rapunzel uses her hair like a pulley or a simple machine. Her hair pulley system makes it easier for her to lift people up into the tower. Since the distance of her hair is great it takes a small amount of force to pull something up the tower. The work Rapunzel does is equal to the large distance times the small force (Work=Df).
Four: Finding Nemo

In Finding Nemo, the boat that takes Nemo away has a motor. The burning gas from the boat creates the energy that powers the motor. The blades of the motor spin when the current is running through a loop of wire that has a magnet causing a magnetic field below it. The current must be AC so that the magnetic field changes otherwise the blades will only spin in halves instead of in a constant rotation.
Three: Beauty and the Beast

When Morisse tries to push the giant castle doors closed, it was difficult! This is due to rotational inertia. Rotational inertia is the property of an object to resist changes in rotation. More mass causes more inertia, but an objects rotational inertia is dependent on where the mass is located on the object. When the mass of the rotating object is located nearer the axis of rotation there is less rotational inertia, making the object much easier to spin.
Two:Dumbo
When Dumbo falls from the burning house he is accelerating at a current rate of 9.8m/s. Lets assume he is free falling, this means that the only force acting on him is the force of gravity. When he leaves the ledge, or his support force, gravity pulls him down and accelerates at an average rate him towards the ground.
One: Snow White
When the evil queen used a long thin stick to make the rock fall on the dwarves, the lightning from the thunderstorm hit the stick and caused her to fall off the cliff to her death. The long, pointy stick acted as a lightning rod which directed the lightning from the clouds to the ground, completing a circuit between them.
